naar aanleiding van het gelijknamige free festival in de zomer van 1969
de song vertolkt het verlangen naar vrijheid en onbekommerdheid (back to the garden),
maar is evenzeer de uiting van het massaal opkomend protest van een jongerenbeweging
tegen het zinloze geweld van de oorlog (Vietnam...) :

Joni Mitchell is in die tijd (1969) de vriendin van Crosby. Er wordt beslist dat haar song zal worden opgenomen op Déjà vu
Woodstock, tree days of peace & music (1970), de film documentaire rond het free festival,
begint met een sfeerbeeld met op de achtergrond de song van de hand van Mitchell, in de iconische vertolking van CSN&Y
let ook, helemaal op het einde, op het in a capella en close harmony gezongen enig mooi nummer Find the cost of freedom
